The Social, Psychological, and Health Effects of Exercise A Field Study on a Sample of Gym-Goers According to the Gender Variable

Section: Physical Education and Sport Sciences

Abstract

The study aimed to investigate the psychological, health-related, and social effects of sports participation among a sample of bodybuilding gym-goers based on the gender variable. It also sought to explore the role of physical activity in strengthening social bonds and improving both morale and physical well-being.

The study adopted a descriptive methodology using a questionnaire tool. The sample included 217 participants attending bodybuilding gyms in the Wilayat of Al Suwaiq in Oman, with males comprising 73.7% of the sample.

The findings revealed that psychological effects ranked highest at 83.2%, followed by health effects at 80.4%, and social effects at 75.4%. Statistically significant differences were found in favor of female participants regarding the psychological effects of sports participation. According to the study's results, the study put forward several recommendations, the most prominent of which include conducting training workshops focused on raising awareness about achieving social and psychological balance through exercise, and developing smart applications dedicated to managing workout sessions within fitness centers and gyms
