Abstract

Cognitive distortions are variables that can rise to the level of a phenomenon. The university stage is one of the most important stages in students' lives, as students' trends and future aspirations are determined there. Cognitive distortions hinder good student interaction, which are negative and unrealistic ideas that negatively affect future thinking and thus their ability to adapt, leading to excessive emotional reactions to suit the situation, as cognitive distortions are a system of immature, incorrect ideas. The research aims to: identify cognitive distortions and future thinking among first-year students of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, and to identify the relationship between cognitive distortions and future thinking among first-year students of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. The researchers used the descriptive approach with the survey and correlational methods to suit the nature of the research. The current research community consisted of first-year students of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences, University of Mosul, for the academic year (2024-2025), numbering (433) male and female students. The data were statistically processed using the statistical package. (spss) to obtain (percentage, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, simple correlation coefficient, t-test for one sample, Spearman-Brown equation, hypothetical mean), and the researchers concluded the following: The research sample does not have cognitive distortion when receiving information and interpreting this information correctly, and the research sample has good future thinking compared to the hypothetical mean. In light of the conclusions, the researchers recommended paying attention to psychological counseling by teachers for first-year students and activating its role in helping students, developing their abilities, and reducing the process of cognitive distortion among them, in addition to conducting similar studies to know the future thinking of second- and third-year students of the College of Physical Education and Sports Sciences.Cognitive distortions are variables that can rise to the level of a phenomenon.
